Rossavini and Zaha Hadid Architect’s Oneiric bringing you into the ocean

Zaha Hadid Architects has done it again, this time for the custom shipyard Rossavini, creating a fully-electric, green-technology flagship. The solar-powered catamaran named Oneiric combines the Italian yard’s engineering expertise with the London-based firm’s distinctive aesthetic, launching us into a new era of sustainable yachting. With three solar panels and an AI-driven control centre, Oneiric is a big step towards reduced environmental impact and energy consumption – all with flawless design. 

The catamaran 

With the help of the sun recharging its highly efficient battery pack, the flagship’s AI control centre then monitors energy consumption so as to maintain battery levels and advise on the most sustainable navigation course possible. This in and of itself is already pretty groundbreaking, but it doesn’t stop there. 

In one day, the Oneiric can cruise up to 100% of the time in full electric mode with zero emissions. On transatlantic crossings, it can cruise in full electric mode for up to 70% of the time, saving approximately 40 tonnes of CO2 compared to a traditional vessel. Another much appreciated aspect of the solar-charged battery pack is that the solar panels charge even when the yacht is not in use – it can even power a villa on land when moored! 

The Oneiric’s multihulls are also much more energy-efficient than traditional monohull yachts due to their exceptional weight-distribution, which provides great hydrodynamic efficiency. 

Sustainability

Because of the fragility of our precious ocean’s ecosystems, it was vital for Rossavini to create a catamaran that would preserve their well-being. The Italian brand’s philosophy and sustainability technology innovations are inspired by phytoplankton, a small marine algae that converts sunlight into energy and provides more than half of the Earth’s annual oxygen production. This is the model which Rossavini has chosen to follow: by working together and in symbiosis with nature, we can all create a healthier environment.

Exterior design 

The design of the yacht was also inspired by the elements – ocean waves to be precise, with their dynamism and fluidity. The sinuous lines and reflective surfaces of the exterior are continued throughout the interior, blurring the boundaries between ship and sea. 

On the main cockpit deck, guests can enjoy a patio with slightly curved walls and ceiling in order to open up the views on the open waters. When walking down the steps to reach the swim platforms, the area gets larger and sheds its walls and ceilings to give way to the sea and open skies. 

The interior 

The multiple indoor and outdoor lounging and dining areas as well as the media room featuring plenty of ground-breaking entertainment technologies are all perfectly arranged into the interior of the yacht, equipped with a large master suite and four guest cabins. Not only are these rooms incredibly beautiful, they are also of exceptional size: the master bedroom, for instance, enjoys a full 180° view with beautiful skylights allowing the light in from above. 

Another unique design feature is that all of the rooms are interconnected, making the catamaran into one big walkable and seamless experience. The materials were also chosen carefully, with textures and visual characteristics that define and accentuate the fluidity of the design. Of course, the weight of materials are crucial to yacht design, and in this case the particularly lightweight materials are also recycled and recyclable in order to ensure energy efficiency and optimal performance. 

Technology

On top of the serenity provided by this beautiful design, the auditory experience aboard the Oneiric is also one of calm: its full-electric mode is capable of completely silent operation, helped by the addition of Rossavini’s Zero Noise technology which isolates noise to its original source. This results in a fully-immersed experience of the ocean, both inside and out.

Zaha Hadid Architects 

The London-based firm founded by the iconic and late Zaha Hadid has been one of the most prolific design firms within both the architecture and mobility sectors, constantly outdoing themselves in their mastery of form and emotion. The firm is known for creating designs that work in synchronicity with their surroundings, and this luxury catamaran couldn’t be a better example of that.
