Volvo collaborates with fashion brand 3.1 Phillip Lim for a sustainable weekend bag
Automotive meets fashion. What have Volvo and fashion brand 3.1 Phillip Lim in common? At first, one might think that there is nothing in common. But that’s not the case. Both share a dedication for sustainability and the use of materials made from bio-based and recycled sources. The result of the collaboration is a limited-edition weekend bag made from materials being used in the interior of Volvo cars.
3.1 Phillip Lim is known in the fashion scene for pushing boundaries in sourcing alternative materials to create conscious luxury and effortless style. Volvo sets itself the ambitious goal to be a climate-neutral company and to operate entirely according to the principles of the circular economy. Thus they are constantly seeking for new sustainable, high-quality materials.
Together these two premium brands from different industries but with a similar intention created a sustainable product redefining what luxury is. The weekend bag is made from the new sustainable material “Nordico”, which is being used for the interior of the brand’s next generation of fully electric cars, starting with the C40 Recharge. It’s the first car that is completely leather-free. Nordico consist of textiles made from recycled material such as PET bottles, bio-attributed material from sustainable forests in Sweden and Finland, and corks recycled from the wine industry. With Nordico, Volvo sets a new standard for the future of premium car interior design. Like the cars, the bag has been inspired by the essence of Scandinavian design and features discreet storage, a double strap and a special signature pouch.
“We have a vision of where we need to go in the future, with the first step to ensure we harness sustainable, natural and recycled materials. The collaboration with 3.1 Phillip Lim, to create a bag inspired by tomorrow’s materials, solidifies both our ambitions to challenge the wider design industry to reconsider the materials we use. From creating runway collections to the interiors of cars, we have a shared responsibility to find sustainable material alternatives.” – Robin Page, Head of Design at Volvo Cars
